Welcome to AyaWaken Church. Ensuring your safety and well-being is our top priority. Ayahuasca is a potent plant medicine, and it’s vital to assess your health before participating in our ceremonies. Below, we outline various health concerns, mental disorders, and other factors that can impact your suitability for participating in an Ayahuasca retreat.
Health Concerns:
Cardiovascular Health
- High Blood Pressure: Individuals with uncontrolled high blood pressure are at risk as Ayahuasca can elevate heart rate and blood pressure.
- Heart Disease: Conditions such as coronary artery disease, heart failure, or previous heart attacks require medical clearance. Ayahuasca can strain the cardiovascular system.
Neurological Conditions
- Epilepsy and Seizures: Ayahuasca can potentially trigger seizures. If you have a history of epilepsy or seizures, participation is not recommended.
- Other Neurological Disorders: Conditions such as multiple sclerosis or Parkinson’s disease should be discussed with a healthcare provider.
Gastrointestinal Issues
- Stomach Ulcers and Digestive Disorders: Ayahuasca can cause intense vomiting and purging. If you have gastrointestinal issues, these symptoms may exacerbate your condition.
Liver and Kidney Conditions
- Liver Disease: Ayahuasca is metabolized by the liver, and individuals with liver disease may have difficulty processing the medicine.
- Kidney Disease: The excretion of Ayahuasca involves the kidneys. Any impairment in kidney function should be discussed with a healthcare provider.
Mental Health Concerns:
Psychiatric Medications
- Antidepressants: Particularly SSRIs and MAOIs, can have dangerous interactions with Ayahuasca. These medications must be tapered off under medical supervision well before the retreat. At least 4-6 weeks before ceremony. Lets us know we can help.
- Antipsychotics: Medications for conditions such as schizophrenia or bipolar disorder can also interact negatively with Ayahuasca.
Mental Health Disorders
- Schizophrenia: Ayahuasca can exacerbate symptoms of schizophrenia and other psychotic disorders.
- Bipolar Disorder: Individuals with bipolar disorder may experience destabilization and should avoid Ayahuasca.
- Severe Anxiety and Depression: While Ayahuasca has therapeutic potential, it can also intensify feelings of anxiety and depression. A thorough assessment is necessary.
History of Trauma
- PTSD and Severe Trauma: Ayahuasca can bring suppressed memories and emotions to the surface. Those with severe trauma histories should approach Ayahuasca with caution and proper support systems in place.
Substance Use Concerns
- Alcohol and Drug Addiction: Active addiction to substances can complicate the Ayahuasca experience. A period of sobriety is recommended before participating.
- Recreational Drugs: Avoid all recreational drugs at least two weeks before and after the ceremony to prevent adverse interactions.
Pregnancy and Breastfeeding
- Pregnant Women: Participation is not recommended as the effects of Ayahuasca on pregnancy are not well studied.
- Breastfeeding Mothers: It is advisable to avoid Ayahuasca as the active compounds can be transferred to the infant through breast milk.
Other Concerns:
Allergies
- Plant Allergies: Inform us of any known plant allergies to ensure safety.
Medication Interactions
- Blood Thinners: Medications such as Warfarin can increase bleeding risk. Discuss with your healthcare provider.
